If you have some free time and want to get the "feel good" feeling, consider volunteering for Assistance League of Los Altos. Their major fundraising is through Costume Bank and the proceeds go towards needy people in Santa Clara County. There are many volunteering opportunities, including working in the Costume Bank, sewing, preparing bags with baby items for poor families, helping with vintage sales and/or vintage fashion shows, getting involved in HOME (Housing for Medical Emergencies) located by Stanford Hospital, which is for patients and their families who are out of area and need a place to stay at highly reduced rates while getting their medical treatment (for cancer, organ transplant, etc.). There is a very minimal commitment and many volunteering opportunities. And the people are fun to work with!

That's great to know! I have no idea they do so much. I thought they only do the Costume Bank. The HOME effort is admirable because I met a family a year ago at Stanford and they needed a place to stay for their son's heart transplant and didn't know where to find low cost short term housing. Thank you Anna!
    Hi Aaron,
Yes, HOME is actually the main philanthropic program they support, but there are many other great programs, such as Baby Bundles (providing baby clothes, diapers, wipes, toys, books for children in need through Santa Clara County), Hug a Bear (providing teddy bears to kids who went through some kind of traumatic experience), Committment to Youth in Foster Care (organizing special Christmas dinner, providing laptops to foster kids who graduate from High School), and Operation School Bell (helping school-age kids with their needs). Costume Bank is the main fundraiser for all these programs. Many people are not aware that the place is ran by volunteers and that it's all for a good cause...
