I don't own an Independent, but I've ridden the steel Planet X (a cross) and I thought it was great. I called up and asked about the frame, specs, fit, etc. and was told to drop by anytime for a fit - even I wasn't planning on buying that day. I did and Dan was totally cool about everything. Super knowledgeable about bikes, customization, and gear. Won't try to up-sell a customer at all and are patient in explaining why one should or should not have a piece of equipment (they kept me from over paying for a "well reviewed" pair of panniers that another LBS called me 'silly' for not having and a heavier-than-normal front rack). They've also got a great bike swap program through their mother store in NH. I tell everyone I can about them. read more
