Wood & Hand Artisans

Wood Refinisher

I have worked with wood most of my working years. My experience began as a teenager cleaning work sites for a builder. Years later I worked up from building houses to specializing as a trim carpenter for 8 years, working mostly in large upscale homes in Memphis. After the recession, I received an opportunity to work in a custom furniture shop under 3 master craftsmen in Memphis, Tennessee. One of whom started his apprenticeship in Europe at the age of 14 in a windmill is driven shop and had been working with wood for over 50 years when I met him.

His son was my age and he was well beyond his years in his abilities! The owner of the shop is a third generation woodworker with over 40 years experience in his craft. He trained at Sotheby’s and was a member of The American Institute of Conservators. Upon moving to the Sacramento area, I worked under another master craftsman that taught me the art of touching-up damaged finished surfaces. Read more

Works out of his home. I really enjoyed him making the process of fixing my grandmothers chair easy for me. Then he did a wonderful job fixing the broken arm and regaled the entire chair. Nice to have craftsman available to do good work !!!

Am very pleased with Stephen's work on my damaged kitchen cabinet. The countertop demo crew cracked the side of my wall oven cabinet leaving a 5-inch long gouge in the wood surface. Stephen shored up the break and patched the front such that it looks literally as if nothing had ever happened. I am so glad these nice cabinets could be saved.

I liked the work so much I am having him rework a few of the upper door fronts to remove the wood panel and insert decorative glass. I would not hesitate to recommend Wood & Hand Artisans.

Very happy with the repair of my drop-leaf secretary desk. Hinges and hardware were fixed, an area at bottom of desk which was chewed by my dog was fixed to look like new. Minor wear scratches removed. The desk looks better and is now sturdier than when it was new. I will definitely use this service again if I need furniture repaired. Fair price which included pick-up and drop-off.

We've had Stephen do two projects for us: - Refinishing a dresser/changing table - Refinishing a small chest of drawers/nightstand We were more than pleased with the work and service. We delivered the items to him, and he got the work done within the timeframe quoted. Stephen definitely knows his craft, and will give good advice and recommendations on what can be done to best achieve the result you're looking for. It's nice to know a service provider with the integrity he possesses, as well--he's very honest, and genuinely seemed to care more about us being satisfied than making a buck. I'd recommend Wood & Hand in a heartbeat.
