This is my seventh year in the world of tax and accounting, following a seven-year mini-career as a science teacher, including two years in Mongolia as a Peace Corps Volunteer.
Why did I go into accounting and tax preparation? A bunch of reasons: I needed to find something to do after I left teaching, something that was a better match for my skill set; I figured it’d give me a fair amount of flexibility in my schedule; I was pretty sure I’d be good at it; and I wasn’t going to have to spend several years and loads of money going back to school.
A few other things about me, if you’re looking for conversation starters: I grew up mostly in the Boston area, graduated from Oberlin College in 1999 with degrees in physics and neuroscience, am interested in all things science- and education-related, sing with the Portland Symphonic Choir, am a fairly good bicycle mechanic, play pick-up baseball on Saturdays during the summer, used to keep a hive of honeybees in my backyard, am fascinated by Portland’s urban forest, and speak pretty good Mongolian. I usually do my income taxes myself but had some complications in 2015 due to moving, house sales in multiple states, rental properties, etc. When I realized I was in over my head and it looked like I was going to owe some major $$, I contacted Matt. He was an absolute pleasure to work with: professional, courteous, and friendly. He explained the entire process at our consultation meeting and answered all of my questions. When all was said and done, he just so happened to get me the biggest return (both fed and state) I've *ever* gotten -- amazing. I nearly wept tears of joy when I saw the final numbers. Matt's pricing is right on par with similar CPA services and worth every penny. I will not hesitate to call Matt for any future tax issues. Awesome!! A++

Matt is the best! I've worked with large corporate CPA firms to Turbo Tax and then found Matt after the IRS said I owed them thousands of dollars for an oversight on Turbo Tax three years ago. That's right, don't mess with the IRS. Matt worked it all out, was the point person on repayment issues and for just slightly more than I spent on that software, Matt saved my proverbial vegan bacon. He is super professional, efficient and honest about what is reality or not in the tax world. He knows his stuff. Recommending him to all my friends... Especially the tax dodging lovelies who want to get back in the virtuous flow. Not that I know or am married to any of those....

Thank you Matt, and hats off to fellow Yelpers who helped me find him. I had been going to H&R Block for the past five years. My wife and I purchased a home recently and we wanted to see if going with a private CPA would pay off. It did. Matt helped us find several different areas in which we were able to significantly increase our tax rebate. He patiently and fully answered all of our questions, and had a some specific recommendations for us that would increase our tax refund for next year. Matt is professional, friendly, and keeps everything simple. He also has a reasonable fee, which is always a priority for me.
