In 1974 Freewheel Bike was founded by a small group of progressive bike nuts who were looking to challenge the norms of the 1970’s bike industry. With a loan of $600 dollars and an eagerness to change the world, this small group of cyclists started a movement. Paying a livable wage and creating a valuable resource for the dedicated cyclists of Minneapolis were at the heart of their mission. The Freewheel Bike Co-op was the first to offer a repair shop that was open to the public, and the first to see the value in offering repair classes. Teaching the newcomer how to spin the wrenches proved to be an excellent way to create new cycling fanatics. While the shop has evolved since those early days as a Co-op, that same spirit of community involvement lives on in the newest generation of Freewheelers. Read more

Repaired my bent derailleur hanger, replaced a chain and cassette and really improved my shifting! Also provided a thorough tune up and only recommended necessary work.

They were great when my wife and I bought our bikes. Even thought they were busy they still managed to help answer all questions and fit our bikes perfect.

Staff is the biggest reason to recommend Freewheel Bike: Deep knowledge, dedicated riders, friendly and helpful. They also have multiple locations in the twin cities area and are convenient to visit.

While purchasing a fat tire bike recently, after stopping by multiple shops, Freewheel Bike had the best selection, and by far the best service out of them all. Someone immediately came to help me out, asked questions, found out exactly what I was looking for, and they had me out on their test track in no time, giving a few different bikes a try. Great experience, thanks Freewheel Bike!!!

A great shop that carried decent products and good at working on your bike. Pretty easy going and let you real try out the bikes before you buy.

I bought my bike at this very store in 1986. I am still commuting with the same bike today. I have always had it serviced at Freewheel--both Midtown and at this shop. Always great experiences. Even in emergency situations these friendly folks will give me a hand. They even advise about the most economical solutions. This past week, I encountered issues on my commute downtown. I brought my bike in, took the mechanics advice for service, and am really glad I did. ...

I've been coming to Freewheel for several years now for help with my old commuter bike. It's on my way home and I'd pop in from time to time with a quick issue with the brakes or whatever. The people working were always super helpful and usually able to quickly sort out whatever I needed on the spot. This week I finally decided to purchase a new bike, and after shopping around all over town, I settled on one from Freewheel. ...

5 stars because they were super knowledgeable, helpful and trustworthy despite the fact that I came in for a used bike AND they DO NOT sell used bikes. If I was a serious biker it seems like it would be a good place.
