Against the Grain Finishing

Furniture Repair

Against the Grain has been refinishing furniture for over twenty years. I have a long time interest in antique and vintage furniture. My interest in older furniture was expanded to include finishing of new unfinished furniture during my long tenure at one of the Portland metro areas unfinished furniture stores.

Although I enjoyed designing and finishing new furniture as well as refinishing older furniture I wanted the freedom to pursue my ideas and skills as an independent business woman with my husband. The result has been the creation of a unique and versatile business that truly goes Against the Grain of the typical refinishing and retail furniture shop. Read more

What an incredible transformation of my husband's family buffet. When we got it from his late mother's house it was in bad shape - after Against the Grain's work it's a beautiful treasure that we have in our home. I can't recommend them highly enough!

Against the Grain refinished a wide chest, a tall dresser and a night stand. All solid mahogany. I couldn't be more pleased with what they did. Great work, very competitive price. I heartily recommend them without any reservation. A sincere and heartfelt thank you to Colleen and Rick

My wife and I bought an antique bakers sideboard. It was in reasonable condition, but we wanted it refinished while retaining it's natural character. I was very happy with against the grain. They were up front in describing the process and timeline. We went back after the side board had been sanded and worked with them to choose the refinishing solution we wanted. And it looks great.

Colleen was able to beautifully restore a 1920s Waterfall Chest to better the new condition. My only regret is not hiring her 20 years ago to do this when I first got the chest. I'll be taking all of my 1920s and 1930s restorations to her. Colleen was also able to accomplish the job in a very short amount of time and meet our moving deadlines for the weekend we took the waterfall chest to our new home by U-Haul. It made a beautiful present for my wife. I am sure that her father, who was the 2nd owner of the chest , will appreciate seeing the chest in its restored state.

Doing business with these warm and wonderful professionals was a pleasure from start to finish, and what a finish it was! My husband literally wept when he saw the table that his grandfather made restored to its original beauty. It had been completely weathered (and not in a charming way) by decades of moves and raising new generations of kids. The workmanship was so superb, it was like time had been turned back. These five stars also include excellence in communication, plus coordination and delivery of services. Thank you, thank you, Against the Grain!
