Voltage Control Lab
Joe Caputo

Sound Design Teacher

Hi! My name is Joe (some people know me as Computo or The Synthesist) and I created Voltage Control Lab as a platform for both new and experienced Modular Synth enthusiasts to learn about their instruments and take control of their sound.

When I started the CNTRPNT modular synth workshop series with my colleague Viktor, we quickly noticed the intense interest that modular users have in furthering their knowledge of the instrument. While there are plenty of computer-based sound design and synthesis programs in the educational sphere, there are few to none that focus on the Modular Synthesizer.

Having spent the last 10 years of my life dedicated to music technology education, the answer seemed obvious. So I created Voltage Control Lab as a comprehensive educational resource for our community. Read more

Joe is a great teacher and a beloved member of the modular scene here in Los Angeles. If you're at all interested in modular synths and want to get off on the right foot Joe is your guru.

Joe's tutorials on complicated modules and modular patch design are the best on YouTube. His series on Ornament & Crime were the only way I finally figured out a few of the more esoteric modes the module. As far as I know they are the only online school dedicated to modular synthesis and sound design, and offer courses as well as private 1:1 instruction in person or via video. I've recommended his Modular 101 course to many friends eager to dive into modular synthesis.

Joe's course on Maths really helped break down a bunch of the uses of this multi-functional module. He thoroughly explained the individual sections and how they can work together, went through patch examples and explained in detail what was going on.

I really enjoyed Joe's way of going through the basics of entering the mighty world of modulars. From building to patching, Joe was totally available to answer any questions. I walked in with zero experience whatsoever and now I can patch my own bleeps and bloops!

Joe was my instructor for a previous sound design course, and so I already knew what a competent, experienced, and approachable teacher he is. When I heard he was going to start hosting modular synth classes online, I didn’t hesitate to sign up.
