Our First Dance

Dance Teacher

I have been teaching social partner dancing in the Seattle area since 1998. Early on I found that there was quite a demand for private lessons for those getting ready for their wedding, as well as private small group lessons, and I enjoyed doing this immensely. Then, after my own wedding, I decided that I wanted to spend more time working with brides and grooms to be since it was what I loved doing most. Thus, the idea for Our First Dance was born in the Winter of 2000. In creating my business, I decided to offer an open group class in addition to private lessons, where couples stay together during the class (a frequent request), and to keep the class size small so that everyone gets as much individual attention as they need. I'm happy to say that Our First Dance has been going strong ever since, and I look forward to all the wonderful experiences it brings. Read more

My (now) husband and I took Angela's beginner group class before our wedding. As someone who hates dancing and is embarrassed to even sway back and forth, I was extremely nervous for this class. But by the end of the first class, I was already feeling much better about our dance. The beginner level is 4 classes long (once a week).. unfortunately we were only able to attend the first 3 because we were sick on the day of the last class. But we still learned the full slow dance, foxtrot, and some of swing. We felt so much more confident for our wedding after just these three classes. We decided to schedule one final private lesson with Angela at her house, where she helped us choreograph a dance to the song we picked (she switched up what we had learned in class, as the 4 step didn't work well with our song choice). It was very basic, just what we wanted, but added in a few spins and a more elaborate part at the climax of the song. Angela is wonderful to work with, she is very motivating and has a fun personality. Our wedding was 6/4 and our dance went perfectly. I DEFINITELY recommend this class if you are feeling nervous about your first dance.

The only negative thing was the size of the dance floor for the amount of people in the class. There were 11 couples total in our class, and we did have to avoid bumping into others while practicing. This didn't bother me much, but sure threw my husband off.

Angela is just wonderful. She helped us put together a dance that was beautiful and showy but still intimate in only a few lessons. Neither of us have much dance experience, but she worked with us and our song, got our feedback, and never pushed too hard. We hope to take some of her group dances too. Definitely come here if you want something memorable for your first dance - you won't regret it!

... We loved the class. Angela is a great teacher who made us feel very comfortable. Over the four weeks, she taught the basics of slow dance, foxtrot, and swing, with a couple fancy looking moves to round out the dances.

We enjoyed the class so much that we signed up for the Wedding Reception Survival class level 2, which conveniently started the week following the level 1 class, and ended a week before our wedding. In the level 2 class, we kept focusing on slow dance, foxtrot and swing. So glad we did level 2 because we learned even more fancy moves to mix in with what we learned from the first class.

Even in the group class setting, Angela is great at providing individual feedback, and is flexible in how the time is used during the lesson (so we can focus on things that need work).

Our first dance during our wedding was a blast, and we got so many compliments on it. We'll definitely consider coming back after the wedding to take additional classes with Angela!

My now-husband and I didn't want our First Dance to look like a high school slow dance, where you just sway side to side and in a circle for a few minutes. I'm so happy we found Angela to give us dance lessons before our August 2014 wedding! One of the first things you notice when you meet Angela is her fun and happy energy. She gets you excited about your First Dance and makes you feel how special and memorable the moment will be for a couple. Initially, my husband and I planned to take just one lesson, because we waited till the last minute to sign up for dance lessons before our wedding. Angela was able to hear our song for the first time at our first lesson, and was able to teach us a nice set of moves to use for our First Dance. We enjoyed the first lesson so much and knew we would benefit from more lessons; and thankfully Angela was able to fit us in to her schedule for a couple more lessons. She taught us more moves and was able to provide us with some choreography that didn't look too "choreographed". I didn't want it to look like we were counting steps as we were dancing in front of our family and friends. In the end, our First Dance went pretty darn well, and it was a fun and lovely moment for us, on the best day ever. We give our highest recommendation to Angela at Our First Dance for every couple who wants to have fun, and feel confident showing off some nice moves, during your First Dance as newlyweds! :)
