Offshoots Boston Landscape

Landscaping

Public and residential landscapes in the US are typically driven by aesthetics, often consuming excessive amounts fossil fuels, water, and natural resources. We believe there is a different way. We create urbanism and landscapes that are sustainable, organic, and contribute to natural ecologies. Offshoots is a hybrid practice offering both landscape architecture, planning, and productive landscape installation services. The name of the practice was formerly Kennen Landscape Architecture which Kate Kennen founded in 2004 and transformed to Offshoots in 2012.

Instead of using aesthetics and art as a starting point for landscape/or urban design, we instead consider what the landscape can DO, ie: what functions can landscape design best provide in any given context. This is used as the generative force for conceptual design and planning. Read more

I've worked with Offshoots and Kate Kennen in a personal and professional setting, and am very pleased with the results. At my house, Offshoots re-designed and re-graded a weed-filled side yard into an attractive and useable space. At work, Offshoots was the landscape architect for new affordable homes that my organization owns. In both scenarios Kate and her firm had a great instinct for balancing vision and cost, listening to me and my wife (or co-workers, depending on the setting), and seeing through a quality execution.

Bonus for home design: Offshoots is also capable of undertaking grading and softscape installation on its own. It's rare to find a high-design firm that's also able to install its own design.

Offshoots completely redesigned and installed our new garden. They worked very collaboratively with us, showed insight, flair and imagination, and complimented our home beautifully. Their design was able to highlight some existing plantings in a superb way. Kate and Joe are a pleasure to deal with, and did a fine job. Their subcontractors were excellent. They have been very diligent in following through in resolution of issues that arose. We would recommend them highly.

Offshoots created a beautiful landscape at my business that is low maintenance and uses little water. We are very happy with the results. It is not often that you find a landscape business run by someone with a degree from Harvard and Cornell. Great experience with both Kate who did the design work and Joe who managed the installation.

I wanted to spruce up my rental property and Offshoots did a great job. The price was fair, the design is elegant, and my tenants are thrilled. Offshoots are very responsive to questions and follow up visits throughout the whole process and during the critual establish period. Very happy customers all around.

When I wanted to spruce up our backyard and the area in front of our brownstone in the South End, I knew it was more than my husband and I could handle. I had no vision and no knowledge of what would grow in our mostly shady yard. That is where Kate, Joe and the crew at Offshoots came in. Kate presented us with several designs which were all professionally laid out. She had detailed drawings and photos to help us better visualize the options. She was mindful of our budget and gave us ideas for add-ons in the future to make our space even more beautiful. The results exceeded our expectations.
