Jewel Yoga

Yoga Instructor

At Jewel Yoga, formerly the Julie Lawrence Yoga Center, we practice and teach Iyengar Yoga, one of the world’s most influential and widely-practiced methods of yoga. Iyengar Yoga emphasizes proper alignment of the body, and it encourages the use of props (blocks, straps, blankets and chairs) to help students safely attain the maximum benefits of yoga. It is an excellent practice for students of any age or ability.

If you have you ever gone to a class or used a video and felt uncertain about what it is you are supposed to be doing, you will appreciate how our classes are different. Iyengar Yoga has a distinct teaching methodology that helps students learn and build confidence. Students in our classes aren’t just trying to follow what someone is doing at the front of the classroom; they are being taught how to do each pose.

In our classes, the teacher demonstrates each pose giving you an opportunity to see and understand the fundamental actions needed to do the pose. The teacher then guides the class with precise verbal instructions and helps you refine your pose with additional instructions or manual adjustments. This learning process harnesses the attention and leads the mind to a clear, calm state of inward reflection. Read more

Visiting from NJ on a business trip and was lucky to be staying only a few blocks from the studio. I am a 15-year student of the Iyengar method and have been blessed to have had the opportunity to have studied with some very experienced instructors back on the East Coast. Well, let me say that Jewel Yoga was WONDERFUL... a home away from home and a blissful place to unwind and shed the stress of long days spent at a business conference. I've taken two classes and and hope take one more before I head home.
Thank you so much for welcoming me ❤

The Iyengar method allows people with differing abilities and physical issues to practice safely. This studio has the best teachers; knowledgeable, experienced, and nurturing. I've practiced yoga all over the world and like to visit lots of different yoga studios. Julie Lawrence Yoga is my favorite studio in this country.

Before I moved to Portland, a yoga teacher in North Carolina raved about Julie Lawrence and on her recommendation I checked out JLYC. I've had a wonderful experience in both Level 1 and Level 2 classes. The instructors are fully committed to the rigor, precision, and mindfulness of Iyengar practice. The light-filled studio has sweeping views of downtown Portland. And I love that my classmates come in all ages and shapes.

Iyengar yoga is the best, very exacting about position, alignment, and most of all being very kind to oneself. Also: the teaching staff is totally amazing!!

I've been a student at JLYC for over 10 years and before that practiced Iyengar yoga. Having come from a somewhat cold and rigid environment before moving here, I was relieved to find a more warm environment. People not familiar with Iyengar yoga might find it a bit austere. But if you are open to yoga and all its types, I highly encourage you to try Iyengar and JLYC specifically. No other yoga focuses on form and alignment quite like this. You don't just practice, you learn to practice, which means you can take the knowledge with you and practice safely in other non-Iyengar classes. ...
