Fruit & Flower Child Care Center

Day Care

We have come a long way since the small wood-framed house in downtown Portland. We moved to our current site at NW 24th Avenue and Irving Street in the early 1970s. Our high-quality program has become a tradition of excellence to working families in the Portland area. We continue to provide high-quality child care for children of families who are employed or in school, and to advocate on behalf of the well-being of children.

That imagination that sparked Fruit & Flower more than a century ago continues to challenge and shape us today. Thanks to the founders: Helen Burrell, Dorthea Eliot, Ellen Eliot, Anna Farrell, Ida Farrell, Antoinette Montgomery, Clara Teal and Frances Warren. Read more

When we got the call a few years ago that we were off the waiting list and accepted to the program, my husband and I were literally jumping up and down as if we won the lottery. That's because we had won the child care lottery in Portland. We toured at least 15 centers, all of them good, and Fruit & Flower was hands down the leader.

... I can't say enough about Fruit & Flower. It will always have a special place in my heart as they have loved and nurtured my children to help them grow and thrive and supported me and my husband as working parents. Honestly, what more can you ask for?

I work at Fruit and Flower and am very impressed with the whole program, if I had a child in need of daycare I would enroll them at Fruit and Flower. They are amazing folks, who really love children, and their philosophy of learning through play is the best thing for young babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. I recommend this place to all who have young children. I am happy to go to work every single day!

Fruit & Flower is a wonderful, warm, engaging, happy place that allows me to be a better mom and a productive part of the working world. The teachers clearly love the children and that means the world to me. My daughter blossoms daily and runs into her room to start her day of fun, reading, activity and learning. I would recommend F&F above all other centers in the Portland area. Added bonus...they provide all the food throughout the day (included in the monthly fee), which is not only healthy, but nutritious and has great variety. She eats things at F&F that she would never eat at home!

Fruit and Flower is an excellent child care center. When we moved to Portland everyone we asked recommended this as the best in town. They were not wrong. My children have been nurtured and cared for by the best early childhood teachers and staff. One can tell the long tradition for excellence of this center, in existence since 1906. Fantastic children:caregiver ratios at all age levels, long-tenured teachers, play-based learning, music, spanish...all included in the monthly rate without extra fees! Diversity and culture are embraced in the Fruit and Flower community. I cannot say enough good things. I highly recommend this wonderful place to parents living or moving to Portland, Oregon.
