Empowered Mamas

Doula

My passion for birth actually began the day I was born! It was Thanksgiving Day, the whole family was waiting downstairs in my grandmother’s home, while my mom labored upstairs, assisted by two wonderful midwives, her two best friends, and her sister. I was born peacefully right before it was time for dinner. My birth story has been an integral part of my life and I love sharing it. When I got older, I became very interested in childbirth from a historical, social and feminist viewpoint, stemming from my realization that the way I entered the world was not the norm in our culture. Through my research, I learned what a doula was when I was 17 and thought, “Wow, my dream job is already out there!” I waited a few years, before taking a doula training, graduating with a degree in psychology and holding several internships focused on reproductive health, childbirth advocacy and midwifery care. I attended my first birth as a doula on Mother's Day of 2009 and have been supporting families ever since!

Being a doula is the most awe-inspiring work I have ever done and I truly love my job! Birth is an amazing and transformative rite of passage and I am blessed to be able to support new families through their incredible journey. In addition to attending births, I also have the pleasure of teaching childbirth classes and encapsulating placentas. Read more

... Shannon was another part of our team through our entire pregnancy. She would check in after our OB appointments and give me feedback about his suggestions. She never made me feel pushed into making any sort of decisions or judged about the ones I made. ...

Post birth she checked up on us and brought my placenta encapulation pills (which I also highly recommend.)

I honestly don't know how anybody could give birth without a doula (and my labor was as short as it gets)-- we feel very lucky that Shannon was ours!

Having Shannon as part of our birth support team was one of the best decisions we made. After our first meeting I was convinced that Shannon's sweet and calming presence, together with her firm, professional, and knowledgable demeanor, would help us during this important time.

Shannon was an integral part of many important decisions - from choosing our hospital to establishing with a lactation consultant before our daughter was born. ...

I would highly recommend hiring Shannon for everything birth related - as your birth doula, for her prenatal birthing classes, and encapsulation services.

We worked with Shannon to welcome our first baby into the world and we are so grateful she was by our side. She is really everything I had hoped for in a doula - professional, supportive, knowledgable, empathetic and very skilled. ...

The sessions with Shannon before and after the birth, as well as many emails and text along the way, were also extremely valuable - her responsiveness and resourcefulness gave us great comfort and assurance. We also took her birth class which was a great way to get even further aligned on knowledge and approach.

I highly highly recommend Shannon and look forward to working with her again!
