Different Fur

Mastering Engineer

Different Fur was founded by the electronic music composer and keyboardist Patrick Gleeson. Its name was suggested by beat poet Michael McClure while he was being recorded by Gleeson. By the early 1970s Gleeson was doing sessions with Jefferson Starship on his recently acquired 8-track recorder and Moog synthesizer. It was his expertise in early synthesizers, like the Moog, which eventually led Gleeson to collaborations with Herbie Hancock, whom Gleeson credits with helping Different Fur get off the ground. By 1971 Gleeson was working with Hancock on his albums Crossings and Sextant. He went on to record many of the synthesizers on Hancock's master work Head Hunters, as well as several solo albums at Different Fur.
Gleeson eventually sold Different Fur in 1985. However, it remains an active recording studio to this day. The studio is currently owned by Patrick Brown who has produced and engineered bands such as the Morning Benders, Toro y Moi, and A B & The Sea. Read more

They use our coffee (Rhetoric Coffee) in the studio so I have to recommend them. Oh and they do spotlights on their artists!!

Patrick Brown at Different Fur has always given me good deals on recording; night spots etc. He even gave me instructions on home recording so I could save money by recording at home and re-amping the pre recorded tracks through his Twin Reverb later. This way, I didn't waste money trying to get the take right and I could use the studio time for more productive things. He's easy and fun to work with.

Great studio, competitive rates, & the staff treats you like family. An amazing group of people & a really impressive space. I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking to record in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Our 6 piece band just recorded live in studio A and managed to get clean, full-sounding takes of a 4 track EP done in a couple days. Shawn is one of the most proficient engineers I've worked with in recent time, he knows his shit and yet retains a sensible approach to the craft that allowed us to get the most out of the equipment and facilities in our brief time there.

One of my favorite places in the world to record music. Great live room, amazing gear, rad people, super fresh production room, incredible location. Such a classic staple studio for San Francisco and the greater Bay Area. So many amazing records have been made here, really look forward to making many more in the future!

Best place to record in San Francisco hands down! Amazing history, gear, room, and Staff! The tracking room sounds great and if you add that with an SSL and the best Engineers in town you get the best tones anywhere in SF. Great vibe and Sauna is a huge plus! Thanks to everyone @ DF for making my songs sounds just the way I wanted them!

Hands down the best studio I have ever been too. Equipment was superb, staff were super friendly and made you feel so welcome. I would 100% recommend Different Fur to anybody wanting to record a song or a voice over. I'm tempted just to go back and hand out with them. Would give 7 stars if possible.
