Debbie the Doula

Doula

The doula supports the mother, partner, and family during labor and delivery. In nearly all societies for which we have records, women have been helped and comforted in labor by other women. These women stayed throughout labor providing physical comfort, emotional reassurance, and information. Today, labor support professionals called doulas (DOO-lah; Greek for "woman who serves") are trained to provide the comfort and care women need
during labor.

A doula is free to be continuously present; she gives priority to warm, nurturing encouraging behavior and has a comfortable relationship with the mother. The doula knows the mother's preferences, concerns, and priorities, and helps with communication. She enhances a partner’s participation while looking after the partner's needs. The doula understands and works to enhance emotional aspects of labor, knows and uses comfort measures and strategies to promote progress, and has considerable experience with laboring women. The doula remains calm and objective and is responsible only for the Moms needs. Read more

Debbie was our doula for our first child. At first we weren't 100% sure we even needed one; there would be midwives, doctors, hospital staff, etc.—what could one more person do? In hindsight, we are sooo happy we hired Debbie. She was with us the entire time, even picking us up at 3:30AM to bring us to the hospital! ... . Above all else, she made our birth experience feel normal and safe. We will absolutely hire her again for our next child.

My husband and I used Debbie for the birth of our first child and already hired her to be our doula for our second. We could not be more pleased with her services. She is incredibly caring and knows exactly how to put someone at ease.

Debbie was our doula for our little baby girl born in August. It was important for me to have an all natural birth. She was supportive every step of the way from the very early stages of the pregnancy to follow-up after the birth. ... I would happily recommend Debbie to any couple seeking the services of a doula (and I would add that I would strongly recommend having a doula attend your birth if you are considering it!).
