Penny Birkhofer founded David Douglas Day Care in 1980. Her mission was to provide quality care at a reasonable price. She succeeded and today the center is operated by her son, Scott, and daughter-in-law, Kelsey. They manage a long-term staff whose experience and passion create a positive educational atmosphere for your child.
We offer a range of programs and prices to meet your needs.
From 6 weeks to 11 years, from hourly, preschool and all day care, we are here for you.

My family is on its second generation at David Douglas Day Care. I enrolled my daughter in 1982. She and my son both attended and loved being there. Thirty years later my daughter enrolled her daughter and in 2015 her second daughter. Both girls are happy and well cared for. In fact, some of the same people who taught her now take care of her children. It has been a blessing to our family for all these years.

Great place to care for, and help raise, your children. We have had both of our kids attend and they do an amazing job of prepping them for school. It feels like many of the staff are almost like family. Our kids talk about their teachers at home all the time. Highly recommended, affordable and always flexible in the availability of care.

"My daughters, ages 3 and 1, have been attending DDDC since they were 4 months old. I love the staff and so do my kids. I am pretty sure all of the staff are trained in early childhood education. I also love that DDDC is so flexible with my schedule. They offer very reasonable rates and are probably one of the only daycares left in Portland that accommodates people with variable schedules."

"The interaction and learning the children get from DDDC is incredible! My daughter always has wonderful things to say about the staff and environment. My son is in the infant building and you just can't ask for better caregivers; All around a great facility packed with exceptional staff who make you feel like family! I look forward to many more years of care from DDDC!"

"My daughter, who is 3, has attended DDDC since she was 8 months old. I have been very happy with the staff, care, and cleanliness of the day care. Being an educator myself, I felt it was very important to take my child to a place where she could thrive both socially, and academically. DDDC has given her just that, and more! She loves her teachers and friends at "school". The owners and director work closely with the students and staff, and have for over 30 years. I am planning on sending my son there in the fall as well (he will be 10 months old). I would highly recommend this day care to anyone looking for a place to send their child, where they will be cared for as if they were their own."
