Burma Design Antique Restoration & Conservation

Furniture Repair

Established in 1984. Matt Burstein began his career as a Furniture Designer and Fine Furniture maker after getting his BA in fine arts in 1980. He went on to work for various custom cabinetry and custom furniture workshops in the Boston area before following his passion for conservation and restoration of fine antique furniture. Matt established Burma Design Antique Restoration and Conservation at the age of 27 and has never lost his passion for fine art and antiques to this day.

We are a well-established antique furniture repair, restoration, and conservation studio providing a full range of services including color and finish matching, missing parts fabrication and replacement, veneer repair, and replacement, cleaning, polishing, finishing and (if necessary) refinishing. All materials, glue, finishes and restoration techniques employed strictly adhere to those appropriate to the period of your antique furniture should that type of treatment be warranted. Read more

Matt Burstein was a pleasure to work with, an expert in furniture restoration, of course, but also kind, funny and responsive. He repaired one of the runners on a beloved Boston rocker. He explained why the runner had cracked and what needed to be done for the repair. He quoted a reasonable price and then delivered as promised, with a smile. What more could a customer want? I am so glad to have found Matt. When another of our antiques needs the care of a professional, we know whom to call!

Matt is thoughtful, thorough, and very talented. I brought in a family steamer trunk and Matt gave me an honest and clearly communicated analysis of the varying levels of work he could do on the piece depending on what I was able to spend, even letting me know upfront that my financial investment would be more for my sentimental value than for the monetary value of the piece (which I greatly appreciated). In the end, Matt cleaned the trunk and repaired parts of its structure that were damaged.

In addition to being very pleased with how the trunk came out, I had a great time chatting with Matt and meeting his awesome dog. He even took a century year-old splinter out of my hand that I got while bringing the trunk into his workshop! All around, Matt is wonderful, and very highly recommended.

Matt is the quintessential knowledgable furniture restorer, and on top of that he is a nice and honest person!

Five years ago, I purchased two Art Deco end tables at a flea market. Five years later, my favorite pieces of furniture were feeling structurally wobbly and needed some help. Matt took an in depth look at the tables, was honest when he said only one needed any in depth work. As an added bonus he showed me how to properly clean the pieces.

I got them back last week and he has done extremely high quality work. No longer wobbly, the tables look like new!
