We lived in a 2 bedroom apartment with my Aunt and Uncle. There were 7 of us, under one roof. The apartment, located in the Gravesend neighborhood of Brooklyn was about 900 square feet. At the time, it felt "big" to me.
My parents would leave the house for work at 7 am and wouldn't return until 10 pm, with full-time jobs during the day and English tutoring on nights and weekends. I saw how hard they worked, day in and day out.
In just a few years, my dad became a Computer Programmer at First Boston, an investment bank, which was eventually bought by Credit Suisse. My mom became an Executive Sales Director at Mary Kay, a multi-level-marketing company that sells skin-care products. She met Mary Kay in Dallas and won the prestigious Pink Cadillac.
