Billy has been playing drums since the age of 3. With supportive parents, he started gigging at the age of 13 with local country and rock bands while still attending High School in Pennsylvania and participating in their marching, concert, and jazz bands. During that period he won the most outstanding soloist awards for the jazz band and was picked to play in the county and district concert bands. At 17 he joined the American Youth Jazz band in Wilmington, Delaware where he toured Europe and performed at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. After graduating High School, he auditioned in Washington, D.C. and was accepted into the US Navy Music Program. Once graduating from the Armed Forces School of Music, his tours of duty included Yokosuka, Japan, Florida, California, and Hawaii. After 10 years of service with the Navy, he departed to pursue his musical endeavors.

Billy has played for name acts such as The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Frankie Laine, Jay and the Techniques, Herman's Hermits, The Ink Spots, and many more. He has also studied with Joe Morello, Carmine Appice, Rod Morganstein, Paul Miller, and Martin Bradfield, to name a few. Read more

My son started taking beginner drum lessons from Billy a few weeks ago, and we've been very pleased! My son is eight and has never played an instrument, so he's a true beginner, with a limited attention span. Billy has been doing a great job of meeting him where he is, and patiently working through each step. In each 1/2 hour lesson, they cover a variety of topics, each long enough to give an understanding, and with encouragement to practice at home. And he always makes sure that my son gets some time on the drum set, which is of course his favorite part! Billy has been friendly, patient, and a great teacher!

Two words: inspiring and enthusiastic. When I took lessons with Billy, he not only taught you how to play and improve your "chops" but he also helps you develop your own style and allowed you to thrive and truly enjoy playing drums. I had a great interest in jazz drumming and Billy nurtured that interest and I saw a big improvement in my drumming repertoire. Even though I may be busy now with school, I always enjoy drumming in my spare time and I miss those Friday drum sessions with Billy.

Billy Wear is a top notch drum teacher. Billy is a working pro musician in San Diego and he has the natural ability to translate his vast musical knowledge into easily digestible lessons for the student. My son took drum lessons from Billy and the strides my son made was vast within a short amount of time. Billy can tailor his lessons to adults or children, and he can teach any percussion instrument or style you desire - drum kit, marching band, congas, cajons, and this includes reading charts. If you're looking for a reliable, professional drum teacher who is also a nice guy, I recommend Billy Wear.
